Launched in 2016 as an educational website for beginners, intermediate and advanced learners of Russian language, News in Slow Russian is a quickly growing community of smart, open-minded, and persistent students who are passionate about the Russian language from all around the world and of all ages (hey, 70+ is not too late to start learning Russian!)
Whether you are just starting to master this beautiful language or you´ve been learning it for a few years (or decades) — you’re in the right place.
Since you’re here right now, something tells me that you’re full of enthusiasm to dig into Russian as soon as possible.
But maybe you…
- Have no clue where to start because there are so many websites that promise to teach you Russian “quickly and easily” but don´t help you at all.
- Need help incorporating learning Russian into your daily routine
- Look for a proven clear technique to practice Russian on a daily basis (and preferably the one that doesn´t take too much time because you´re busy with your work and life in general, I get it)
- Feel isolated. You wish more people could relate to what you’re trying to do. (Your friends and family are supportive, but don’t quite get why you´re learning Russian).
No matter where you are in your learning Russian journey, you want to finally get to the point where you can read Russian books and listen to Russian radio and watch Russian movies / TV.
You’re READY to dedicate time and efforts to finally bring your Russian to the next level. But you just don’t know how to make that a reality. You feel stuck.
Trust me, my friend, I’ve totally been there.
Now, around these parts, I have a few core beliefs…
- I believe you have the inherent, baby I was born with this power to learn any language you want. And even though Russian may seem a little more difficult than many other languages, it´s not an exception.
- I believe you can learn Russian without even having to leave your home country. As long as you have a steady Internet connection, you already have all tools to master the language. You just need to find a study technique that works for you and stick to it.
- I believe you can learn Russian on your own without group lessons (ugh, they´re the worst) and private tutors. At some point, you´ll need a native to practice speaking with, but you can totally master reading, writing and listening at home.
The gist is this: you can do it! Yes, you can master Russian on your own… and I´m here to help you do that.
Yo! My name is Kristina Malidovskaya and I am a digital content creator at News in Slow Russian, a service that delivers text and audio lessons, articles, books and interactive media to thousands of people learning Russian language. Am I a teacher? NO. I don´t teach you Russian, but I give you the tools you need so that you can teach yourself Russian. After all, it all depends on you, whether you stick to the plan and gradually build your Russian proficiency… or give up.
How did this become my life?
Well, in 2013, I moved from Russia to Colombia (Yes, Colombia, the country in Latin America) without speaking a word in Spanish. What was supposed to be a 3-month contract ended up being full 9 months. Living abroad was a beautiful adventure, but it often made me miss my native language that I had nobody to practice with.
Second, I had to learn Spanish, learn it quickly and absolutely on my own (I had neither time nor money for private tutors). That was quite an emotional roller-coaster, but at the same time a valuable lesson that helped me understand what all self-learners are going through and what difficulties they are facing.
Over the next 3 years, I finally managed to grow vocabulary and learn some grammar to be able to read and speak Spanish. But what was the point of all this, if people were speaking so fast that I literally couldn´t understand a word?
“SLOWLY, PLEASE!”, I wanted to scream every time I had to communicate with somebody in Spanish. I´m not even saying about local TV or music. That was completely out of my reach.
Sounds familiar? I bet so.
And that is how News in Slow Russian appeared. It´s a project where I combined my passion to help foreigners that are struggling with Russian language (and I met oh so many of them abroad) with my knowledge of struggles that every language self-learner is going through (same struggles I had and still have with Spanish) with my desire to speak more of my native language when I am living abroad.
Why news and not something else in slow Russian? Because news articles are entertaining and educational at the same time, they always contain lots of handy words. And if you have a local around to practice your maybe not so good Russian yet, it´s a great way to start a conversation about the news you recently read using vocabulary that you´re already familiar with.
So now I want to help you with your Russian.
Through News in Slow Russian website, books, and more. I’ve already helped hundreds of intelligent, determined, adventurous students LIKE YOU, significantly improve their Russian.
Before I go, I want to invite you to try News in Slow Russian (it’s free). Try it and see how you would become more confident with reading and listening to Russian over time.
